Wellington Suites is Environmentally friendly. We aspire to be innovative and creative. We are very proud to have won the Environmental Excellence Award from the Federation of Rental Housing Providers.

The award recognizes Wellington Suites' success in substantially reducing the use of electricity, gas and water, and in dramatically increasing our recycling.

In 2007, we also received an Environmental Award from the Recycling Council of Ontario. We had a celebratory BBQ for tenants of the building with special guests Mayor Thompson and Police Chief Hoath of Port Hope.

Highlights of Accomplishments

Gas consumption reduced by 53%
Water consumption reduced by 32.5%
Electrical consumption reduced by 28%
Recycling (waste diversion) increased from 10% to 60% (industry standard is under 20%)
Implementation of tenant awareness/education programs
Implemented numerous initiatives to promote environment sustainability and resource conservation
Consumption of gas, water and electricity regularly tracked and reviewed

Key Initiatives

Replaced all windows with energy conserving, low e thermal pane units
Insulated roof to maximize efficiency
Fresh air fans operate only as required
Gas boilers replaced with two modulating high efficiency units
Ensuite incandescent light bulbs replaced with energy saving spiral fluorescents (over 800 bulbs replaced)
Elevator motors/controls replaced with modern energy-efficient units
Replaced all toilets with low-flow models
Installed aerators/flow reducers in all showers, kitchen and bathroom taps
Planted over 20 trees to block winter winds and provide shade in summer
Actively promoted conservation and recycling awareness to staff and tenants
Introduced book/magazine/goods exchange, plus Safe Battery Disposal
Compost all leaves & yard waste on site
Made recycling easy, instead of difficult

Therefore, due to our success in these critical areas, we were honored to have received the Environmental Excellence Award from the Federation of Rental Housing Providers of Ontario.
